Premier Giorgia Meloni stressed the importance of averting the West splitting over Ukraine in talks in London Sunday with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer ahead of a summit on Ukraine in the British capital later in the day.
"I think it is very, very important that we avoid the risk of the West dividing," Meloni said as she met Starmer in Downing Street before the London summit on Ukraine and European defence.
"And I think that in this the UK and Italy can play an important role in building bridges", she said.
The 16-nation summit on Ukraine and European security, which was called before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's public humiliation at the White House Friday, discussed a British-French proposal to develop a just and lasting peace plan with moves forward by a European coalition of the willing.
Both Starmer and Meloni phoned US President Donald Trump after the bust-up in the Oval Office. On Sunday they re-emphasized the importance of transatlantic ties.
