Executive will move forward on reform without hesitation

Positons were unchanged after long talks Wednesday between the government and magistrates' union ANM on the government's plans to reform the justice sector by separating the career paths of judges and prosecutors so they can no longer switch between the two roles, a move the ANM claims, despite repeated government denials, is aimed at bringing prosecutors under executive control.
ANM President Cesare Parodi said his organisation would continue to try to fight the reform while the government had said it would push ahead with the reform, which requires Constitutional changes and thus will be put to a referendum, after the discussions with Premier Giorgia Meloni and other government members including Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, the prime mover behind the reform plan.
"It was a long meeting in which there was a long exchange of opinions that, I must say, did not lead to substantial changes in our positions and even less in those of the government", Parodi said.
"I believe it was not useless because we had the opportunity to explain in detail the specific, technical and legal reasons that lead us to absolutely not agree with this reform. We did it. And we took note very clearly of the government's will to move forward without any hesitation, and any changes on the point".
