President Sergio Mattarella warned of
the dangers of digital media and of Artificial Intelligence on
Thursday in a message marking the 40th anniversary of the
creation of the Italian-language Radio and Television Community
(Comunità radiotelevisiva italofona - CRI).
"The work of the operators and journalists of the
Italian-language Radio and Television Community is invaluable in
this period in which language, driven towards standardization
and impoverishment through the simplification processes of
digital media, tends to reduce the richness of the lexicon," the
head of State said.
"The Italian-speaking communities present in the various
countries (of the world) represent fertile breeding grounds for
the multiplication of the cultural stimuli of Italic
civilisation.
"Language is the key to accessing an extraordinary cultural
'specificity' unfolded over the centuries and offered to the
human community in its highest expressions: science, art in all
its forms, lifestyles," Mattarella continued. "Language is also
an instrument of freedom and emancipation: exclusion stems from
poverty of the ability to express oneself, of lexical heritage.
"Subjection is nourished by the cancellation of words and by
replacing them with those of the despotism of the day.
"We must avert the risk, which could become even higher with the
advent of artificial intelligence, of diminishing linguistic
pluralism, with the consequent impoverishment of the cultural
heritage that languages convey, in favour of new languages with
a vocation exclusively functional to digital operations".
