The EU must boost its economic and
business model against distorting tariffs, the president of
Italy's antitrust authority, Roberto Rustichelli, said in his
annual report Tuesday.
"The international trade system, long based on productive
integration and free trade, is now shaken by the introduction of
a pervasive network of tariffs and other non-tariff measures,
seriously distorting the competitive comparison between
companies and between countries", he said.
"In a context of tense trade relations, the traditional vocation
for international trade and the close integration in global
production chains make the European economy particularly exposed
to market fluctuations and new protectionist pressures.
"For this reason, growth in the current scenario is increasingly
linked to the strengthening of the European development model so
that, by fully enhancing the single market, structural
vulnerabilities and dependence on external factors are reduced,
bridging the gap in productivity and innovation compared to
other economies".
Rustichelli also called for greater competition in order to
boost growth and workers' rights.
