Five nuns have fled a northern
Italian convent after the abbess they were fond of was sacked
amid "grave vicissitudes", they told police in informing them
that they were safely on their way to another secret refuge.
The nuns from the convent at San Giacomo di Veglia at Vittorio
Veneto near Treviso, which is famous for the Prosecco DOCG it
produces, said they had decided to quit the religious retreat
due to "unbearable tensions" following the dismissal of Mother
Superior Aline Pereira.
They said they had decided to go to the local Carabinieri
barracks to report their defection in order to avoid alarmism.
The Vatican Dicastery for Institutes of the Consecrated Life
said it had placed the convent under new management due to "a
series of critical issues", under the guidance of Mother Martha
Driscoll, emeritus abbess of Gedono in Indonesia.
