The mayor of Pozzuoli in the heart of
the seismic volcano caldera that is the Campi Flegrei said after
the latest quake there Tuesday that residents must learn to live
with bradyseism, the slow, periodic uplift and subsidence of the
ground in the volcanic area west of Naples.
"The phenomenon of bradyseism will never go away. We must learn
to live with this reality", said Pozzuoli Mayor Luigi Manzoni in
a press conference that was called at the headquarters of the
Civil Protection in Monteruscello, after Tuesday morning's
tremors.
Manzoni confirmed that "there was a double collapse of a ridge
and an old ruin, but without critical issues for people". "We
will never set up tents under houses like in the 80s. Citizens
must understand how to live with bradyseism.
"Those who would like a tent under their house must understand
that this is not part of our plans for bradyseism, I have
already said it several times and I will repeat it", the mayor
said.
"The traffic chaos following the 4.4 earthquake occurred because
there is always little awareness of how to behave, even if I
understand the anxiety of a parent who wants to go pick up their
children from school even if they then act in a way that is not
in line with the emergency plan.
"Now we will continue to check on schools and public buildings,
and we will respond to calls from citizens about problems in
their homes. If there are major problems we will be able to take
precautions but at the moment we do not see any major critical
issues, only fear among the population".
