Belgian federal prosecutors have asked the European Parliament to revoke the immunity of two Socialist MEPs in connection with the Qatar-European Parliament bribery scandal dubbed Qatargate, judicial sources told ANSA on Tuesday.
The information was confirmed by parliamentary sources.
The MEPs belong to the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) and are Alessandra Moretti and Elisabetta Gualmini, ANSA has learned.
The request is set to be announced at a plenary session scheduled on March 10 before it is examined by the European Parliament's Committee on Legal Affairs.
The names of the two MEPs were first mentioned at the beginning of the bribery case that exploded in December 2022.
Several Italians including former MEP Antonio Panzeri, one of the alleged ringleaders of the European Parliament suspected bribery and corruption case, are accused of involvement in corruption in order to sway the European Parliament's positions.
The scandal, the biggest to rock EU politics in decades, hinges on suspicions that Qatar and Morocco bribed lawmakers, parliamentary assistants and non-governmental organisations to influence decision-making in the European assembly.
