Prefects and police chiefs attending a national conference in Rome on Monday have been urged to increase the repatriation of irregular migrants, according to well-informed sources.
The strong call to boost the repatriation of illegal migrants was issued during the Conference of Italian prefects and police chiefs, along the guidelines of the government's policies to fight irregular migration, the sources said.
The event was attended, among others, by Premier Giorgia Meloni and Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi.
According to the data examined, irregular migrants are allegedly more likely to commit a felony than regular migrants and Italians.
The interior ministry's data on 2024 showed that, out of a total of 822,801 people who were arrested or reported to the authorities last year, 34.72% were foreign nationals.
In particular, among the people who were arrested or reported to the authorities foreigners represented 23.80% of those accused of murder; 35.73% of those reported for attempted murder; 43.99% for sexual violence; 47.84% for theft; 52.47% for robbery; 39.52% for drug-related crimes; 43.25% for exploiting prostitution, according to the interior ministry.
