The Italian Ambassador to Ecuador, Giovanni Davoli, opened the 'International Training Seminar on Money Laundering and Criminal Forfeiture' in Quito, organised by the Italian programme for judicial cooperation in the country, 'Itajus', run by the Italian-Latin American Institute (Iila). The seminar counts with the participation of Italian experts in the field, including magistrates and representatives of the Guardia di Finanza. Present at the occasion were Ecuador's Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld, the President of the National Court of Justice, José Suing, the President of the Council of the Judiciary, Mario Godoy, the Public Defender of Ecuador, Ricardo Morales, and the Rector of the Institute of Advanced National Studies (Iaen), Carlos Jacomè.
In front of a large audience of magistrates and legal practitioners, the Ambassador reaffirmed our country's commitment to supporting the fight against transnational organised crime in the region, through the legal diplomacy programmes coordinated by Farnesina. Minister Sommerfeld thanked the Italian government for this 'invaluable' support. The authorities present also recalled the victims of the mafia in Ecuador, most recently Colonel Porfirio Cedeño, commander of special operations in the city of Duran (the most violent in the country), who was barbarously murdered last Friday. The Ambassador also signed with the rector of the Iaen a memorandum of understanding between the Italian Embassy and the institute for the strengthening of academic cooperation between the two countries, including on training and research in the judiciary and the fight against the mafia.
