The European Parliament called on
the EU Commission and member states "not to recognise the
results of the Belarusian elections scheduled for 26 January and
the legitimacy of the dictator in office Aleksandar Lukashenko".
In a resolution that was adopted with 429 votes in favour, 205
against, and 23 abstentions, MEPs acknowledge that the upcoming
elections will feature only "fictitious candidates" to challenge
Lukashenko, in contrast to 2020. They also express their
unwavering support for the Belarusian people in their pursuit of
democracy, freedom, and human rights. The MEPs also expressed
their grave concern about the situation of political prisoners
in Belarus.
