Italian President Sergio Mattarella
joined international leaders at Auschwitz on International
Holocaust Remembrance Day on Monday for the ceremony to mark the
80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi death camp.
Other leaders in attendance included German Chancellor Olaf
Scholz, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, King Charles
of the United Kingdom, French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish
President Andrzej Duda and Ukrainian President Volodymyr
Zelensky.
The ceremony was opened by Holocaust survivors Marian Turski,
Janina Iwanska, Tova Friedman and Leon Weintraub, who talked of
their experiences and warned the world against forgetting what
happened.
