The State Attorney's Office in
Florence has opened an investigation into the death of three
elderly nursing home patients allegedly caused by a severe form
of gastroenteritis possibly linked to food poisoning,
investigative sources said Friday.
Prosecutors are considering charges of culpable trade of
adulterated food and manslaughter, investigative sources said of
the probe into the illness 114 elderly residents of four care
homes in the area of Florence.
Nobody has been placed under investigation so far, according to
investigative sources.
Overall, three of the 114 residents who fell ill last Sunday
died.
The first two seniors died Monday at the Santa Maria Nuova
Hospital while a third died Thursday at Careggi.
The death of a fourth resident has not been linked to the
gastroenteritis, health sources said.
A total of 173 seniors were staying at the care homes.
