The Ambassador of Italy in Brazil, Alessandro Cortese, inaugurated yesterday, 6 May, together with the Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, the fifth edition of Wine South America, in the heart of Serra Gaúcha.
The authorities, who were also accompanied by the councillor for Culture of the Veneto Region, Cristiano Corazzari, the councillor for Agri-food Resources of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Stefano Zannier, and the President of Ente Friuli nel Mondo, Franco Iacop, visited the stands of the fair, with a special focus on the Italian ones.
'It felt like being in Italy. It is a great opportunity for friendship: wine culture is a universal language that unites our peoples. In Brazil, wine was introduced by Italian immigrants, and today it represents a fundamental part of Brazilian wine culture,' said Ambassador Cortese, inviting everyone to discover the Italian wines at the fair.
There was a record number of participants from Italy, with 80 wineries present, about half of which were gathered in the pavilion organised by Ice - Agency for the promotion abroad and internationalisation of Italian companies, an organisation led in Brazil by Milena Del Grosso. There was also great appreciation for the stands of the Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto regions, which stood out for the quality and variety of their wine proposals.
The event, which will continue until 8 May, is an important showcase for Italian wine in Brazil, helping to strengthen trade and cultural relations between the two countries. Italy is the world's leading wine producer, with a production of 41 million hectolitres, according to data from the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). In Brazil, Italy is the fourth largest wine exporter, with a growing market share and a steady increase in exports.
